Electronic devices are not biodegradable. They are packed with toxic heavy metals—lead, mercury, cadmium—and rare earth elements that are environmentally devastating to mine. Sustainable ICT requires a shift toward a Circular Economy. This means designing devices for “Repairability,” creating modular hardware that can be upgraded rather than replaced, and developing advanced recycling protocols that treat an old laptop as a “mine” for materials rather than a piece of trash. A “smart” world cannot be built on a foundation of ecological waste.

Looking Ahead: The Next 20 Years of ICT

We are currently reaching the limits of classical physics in computing. As we shrink transistors to the size of a few atoms, we encounter the “Quantum Wall,” where traditional electricity starts to behave erratically. To go further, we have to change the fundamental rules of the game.

Quantum Computing and the Next Leap in Processing Power

If a classical computer is like a librarian looking through books one by one, a Quantum Computer is like a librarian who can read every book in the library simultaneously.

Classical computers use “Bits” (0 or 1). Quantum computers use Qubits, which, thanks to a phenomenon called “Superposition,” can exist in multiple states at once. This isn’t just a 2x increase in speed; it is an exponential leap.

In the next 20 years, Quantum ICT will redefine what is “solvable”:

  • Material Science: We will be able to simulate new molecules to create room-temperature superconductors or more efficient batteries, solving the energy crisis.
  • Cryptography: Quantum machines will be able to crack almost all current encryption methods in seconds, forcing a total “Security Reboot” of the global financial system.
  • Optimization: From air traffic control to global supply chains, quantum ICT will find the “Perfect” solution to problems that would take a modern supercomputer a thousand years to calculate.

As we move toward this “Quantum Era,” the final summary of ICT remains the same: we are building tools to extend the reach of the human mind. The technology will change—from copper to fiber to qubits—but the goal is constant. We seek to collapse the distance between an idea and its execution. Our responsibility is to ensure that as the “Information” becomes more powerful and the “Communication” becomes more instant, we don’t lose the human wisdom required to guide them both.
