In the professional diagnostic bay, we don’t just look at whether a capacitor is “alive”; we look at its ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). No capacitor is perfect; they all have a tiny amount of internal resistance. As a capacitor ages, its ESR increases.

The ATX12VO Standard: Moving 5V/3.3V to the Motherboard

While GaN changes the components, ATX12VO (12V Only) changes the entire conversation between the PSU and the motherboard. For thirty years, your PSU has been a “jack of all trades,” generating 12V, 5V, and 3.3V rails internally and sending them through a massive, cumbersome 24-pin cable. ATX12VO simplifies this by eliminating the 5V and 3.3V rails from the PSU entirely.

As energy costs rise and governments implement stricter “Green” computing standards (like the California Energy Commission’s Title 20), the industry has had to tackle the “Phantom Load.” This is the power your PC draws while it is “off” or “sleeping.”

In a professional environment, where hundreds of workstations might be in a “sleep” state overnight, the difference between a 5W standby draw and a 0.5W standby draw is massive.

  • The ErP Lot 6/7 Standard: Modern PMICs (Power Management ICs) are now designed to “gate” almost all power during S5 (soft off) states.
